How To Determine Pool Table Slate Type

If you want to figure whether you have 1-piece slate pool table or a 3-piece slate pool table, this page will show you how to identify your pool table slate.

Pool Table Slate Types

In the United States, pool tables with 3-piece slate construction are most common. If you purchased a new pool table within the last few decades, you likely have a 3-piece slate table.

Older pool tables, made by brands like Empire and California Billiards, are more likely to have 1-piece slate construction. Generally speaking, 1-piece-slate pool tables will feature wood paneling, and their legs should appear similar to the table in the example photo.

Identifying Slate Type

To determine whether your pool table has a 1-piece slate or a 3-piece slate, start by standing in front of the center pocket on your pool table.

Overhead View of Center of Pool Table

Move your finger to the left of the center pocket, centering it between the two diamonds/ markers.

Underside View Center of Pool Table

Look underneath your table in the area where you were pointing. If you see a gap or a seam, then it is a 3-piece slate pool table. If you don’t see a gap or a seam, then you may have a 1 piece slate pool table.

  2. the sample photo you show above looks like my Dad's old one – ATI model 718. My brother-in-law thinks it is a 3 piece, but our local shop thinks it is one-piece without looking at it. Is it possible the ATI 718 was made with both options?

    1. Hi Jane, in my personal experience, I’ve only ever experienced ATI tables (such as the one pictured in this article) as 1-piece slate pool tables.

I did some independent research and I located a BilliardsForum.com thread that mentions there could be more than just the 1-piece slate options for that particular table, but I personally do not have any concrete information about them.
